Voices of the Island
Voices of the Island looks at the Creole identity of Reunion Island as a hybrid identity formed by gathering cultural fragments that — just like the subjective experience of the weather — constantly adjusting, rapidly evolving, and never settling. Using daily rituals, storytelling, and family memories, Raphaëlle Von Knebel search for belonging and the lost sensations of a distant, hybrid environment.
The interactive installation uses the input of both subjective and quantitative data from different sources to stay connected with the island. The voice of her creole grandmother mingles with the spectators, impacting the lights and modifying the space in a manner that seems as uncontrollably paradoxical as the weather.
