Using daily rituals, storytelling, and family memories, Raphaëlle Von Knebel search for belonging and the lost sensations of a distant, hybrid environment. The interactive installation uses the input of both subjective and quantitative data from different sources to stay connected with the island. From tropical cyclones to sunny coasts, the varied climate has significantly shaped how people interact with their surroundings. This project, featured during France Design Week and part of a residency at the Cité des Arts, is inspired by a childhood memory: the sound of the rain on the tin roof of a tropical home. Through meticulous observation and the gathering of archives, including photos, videos, sketches, and limestone rocks, Raphaëlle Von Knebel identified the unique characteristics and richness of the Calanques National Park, situated along the Mediterranean coast in the South of France. To capture the essence of the geographical territory, she translated her insights into 3D printing and crafted alginate molds. These molds became the foundation for creating unique glass pieces.&nbsp; Throughout the process, there was a particular emphasis on engaging her fives senses. By climbing the cliffs of Callelongues, or wandering around the islands of Frioul, she tried to understand places through touch. Glass not only reproduces the shape of the limestone but also preserves its imprint and memory. The architecture of the colonial-influenced towns is extremely rich and composite, reflecting the island’s population, which comes from a variety of origins: Asia, particularly China and South-West India, Madagascar, East Africa and Europe. Traditional buildings stand alongside religious buildings: Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and Christian. These different religions coexist in harmony and nourish Reunion’s heritage. However, Reunion is not excluded from the emergence of modernism. The urban and demographic growth of recent years in Reunion has changed the face of the cities. After careful observation of the architecture of the Reunionese city, this project aims to recreate the harmonious coexistence of different cultures on this island. By creating a space that pays tribute to the cultural heritage and questions our relationship with each other and our environment. Engraved on plaster is the story of her grandmother about fire and matchsticks in Reunion Island. This plaster is then used as a mold to blow glass, capturing the shape and imprint of her engraved words. The resulting glass piece can function as a lamp; with a light or candle inside, the shadows and reflections of the written inscriptions would be revealed. Specialized in revealing the boundary between the visible and the invisible in meteorological phenomena, fostering a deeper understanding of our evolving relationship with nature.&nbsp; Born in 1996 on Reunion Island to a Creole mother and a Franco-German father, she pursued her education in Foreign and French literature. Subsequently, she enrolled in architecture studies at the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Strasbourg and later pursued Product design at the Haute Ecole des Arts du Rhin. She furthered her academic journey with a master's degree at the Institut Supérieur des Arts et du Design in Toulouse and an international master's at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. In 2022, she completed a thesis exploring the paradoxical nature of weather—a phenomenon that both unites and separates us, questioning on our relationship with the environment and each other.
